Tour Overview

With 300 châteaus or castles to explore, the Loire Valley offers adventures for all ages. Imagine dedicating an entire trip to this picturesque valley, immersing yourselves in the charm of its towns and the grandeur of its châteaus. During our 12-day trip to France, we set aside one day to explore this region that inspired Disney's Beauty and the Beast. We opted for a 13-hour tour through Viator to make the most of our time. Our itinerary included the Château Chambord and the Château Chenonceau, both brimming with history and architectural marvels. Along the way, we stopped in Blois for lunch, refueling our energy to continue the adventure. As the day unfolded, we couldn't resist a wine-tasting experience at Chenonceau, the perfect way to toast to an unforgettable family escape in this enchanting corner of France!

Choosing this extraordinary tour promises an unforgettable experience, starting early in the morning at the entrance to the catacombs of Paris. From there, our journey transports us to the enchanting Loire Valley by bus, where we are introduced to our brilliant tour guide, an expert in the history of France, particularly concerning the Loire Valley and the two magnificent châteaus we are about to explore. Each time we approached a château, our guide skillfully whisked us back in time, effortlessly bridging the gap between centuries past and the present. Captivating us with a comprehensive overview of the property and its architectural marvels, all in just fifteen minutes. But the guide's fascinating stories of the charismatic figures who once constructed and resided in these grand homes genuinely brought the past to life, allowing us to vividly envision life within the walls of these opulent estates.

Château Chambord

Our first stop was the Château Chambord, a true marvel of architecture and history. As the largest château in the valley, it was initially commissioned by Francis the 1st as a hunting lodge in the 16th century. While walking up to the chateau, this structure's sheer magnitude and scale impressed us. Construction took twenty-eight years to complete and showcases the dedication and craftsmanship of its builders. The castle's traditional configuration of a Keep, corner towers, and a moat added to its grandeur, but the ingenious double helix open staircase, a masterpiece designed by none other than the renowned Leonardo da Vinci, truly amazed our family. As we ascended its three stories, we marveled at the design of the intertwined staircases, each one leading us to the center in a remarkable and unique way. Within its walls, we discovered sixty rooms, many adorned with the symbol of Francis the 1st, the salamander king. It is easy to see why this castle inspired Disney's Beauty and the Beast when you step out onto one of the 360-degree terraces, offering breathtaking views. Our journey through Château Chambord was an extraordinary encounter with a glimpse into the life of royalty, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Blois

After a fantastic experience at Château Chambord, our journey continued towards the captivating Château Chenonceau. Along the way, we stopped in the charming town of Blois, which we quickly liked and felt at home. Strolling through its beautiful streets, we were greeted by various cafes, bakeries, and boutiques, tempting us with their offerings. For lunch, we stumbled upon a small deli serving shepherd's pies, quiches, and sandwiches. And just down the street, we found a coffee shop that had us indulging in donuts, pastries, coffee, and lattes, the perfect mix to fuel our next adventure. But the highlight of our Blois visit had to be a small boutique with exquisite teas and spices. Unable to resist, we left with a tin of the "happy mind blends" from Kusmi Tea, eager to experience its calming flavors back home. While returning to the bus, we were surprised by the town's unique features. This building housed a mesmerizing mechanical clock. Every hour, dragons would leap out of the windows, capturing our gaze before retreating inside. This unique display, taking five minutes, was the perfect end to our stay and left us charmed by the fantastic town of Blois.

Château Chenonceau

Prepare to be transported into a captivating tale of love and rivalry as we arrive at our final destination: the enchanting Château Chenonceau. Fondly known as the Lady Castle, this extraordinary château holds a history steeped in intrigue and passion. It all began when Henry the 2nd bestowed this grand estate upon his beloved mistress, Diane de Poitier, angering his wife, Catherine de Medici. The château itself is a masterpiece, seemingly floating over the calm waters of the river Cher. A river is so quiet it gives the illusion of a lake, and the story of the château's construction is equally fascinating, though not so calm. Originally, Diane built a bridge over the river. Still, after the king's untimely death during a jousting duel and his wife's eviction of Diane, Catherine took matters into her own hands, adding a two-story gallery to create yet another wing to the estate. The gardens surrounding the château are beautiful and punctuated by a reflecting pool with a fountain. Stepping inside, twenty opulent rooms greeted us, each telling its story. Among them, the stand-out feature was the intricate tapestries adorning the walls of the Guard's quarters, weaving tales of history and artistry. As we explored this remarkable castle, we couldn't help but immerse ourselves in the decadence, history, and captivating narrative.

Wine Tasting

Our journey through Chateau Chenonceau finished with a wine tasting that helped us to feel like locals. Amidst the grandeur of this historic estate, we were invited to taste three selected wines produced at the chateau, and each sip celebrated the region's rich, centuries-old heritage. As we raised our glasses, we couldn't help but toast to the past and the present, merging the chateau's history with the winemaking artistry. It was a moment of indulgence that added another layer of magic to our visit.

As our unforgettable journey through the Loire Valley ends, we find ourselves filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude for the incredible experiences we've shared.
